Is Your Period Worse in January

January. The start of a new year. A time of fresh starts, resolutions, and… THE WORST PERIOD EVER?

You’re not alone. Winter can through several curveballs at your body, and your menstrual health is no exception.  So if your expressing, heavier, sore, delayed or longer periods keep reading.

Winter’s Impact on Your Period

When temperatures drop and daylight hours shrink, your body undergoes subtle changes that can influence your menstrual cycle.

Lack of Sunlight Causes Irregular Cycles
Winter’s shorter days mean less sunshine, which can really mess with your body’s internal clock. Research shows that reduced sunlight exposure affects the production of melatonin and serotonin, two hormones that play a role in regulating your menstrual cycle. A study published in the journal Gynecological Endocrinology found that women living in northern latitudes (with less sunlight in winter) were more likely to experience irregular menstrual cycles during the darker months.

Cold Weather Worsens Period Pain

When the temperature drops, your body tries to conserve heat by reducing blood flow to your extremities. This process, called vasoconstriction, and means blood vessels to constrict, potentially making cramps feel sharper or more persistent and can also affect blood flow to your uterus. A 2014 study in the journal Pain Medicine found that cold exposure can increase the intensity of menstrual cramps in some women. So if you’re feeling extra crampy this winter, try applying a warm compress to your lower abdomen – it can help counteract the cold’s effects!

Holiday  Stress Causes Irregular Menstrual Cycles

Let’s face it, the festive season isn’t always as relaxing as we hope. Last minuet present buying, family drama and cooking the Christmas dinner can all spike your cortisol,  often called the “stress hormone”, which can interfere with the normal production of reproductive hormones like estrogen and progesterone throwing them off, by January, you might be feeling the ripple effects of holiday stress.

Christmas Food Overload Can Intensify Period Pain

Winter cravings for rich, carb-heavy foods can disrupt your blood sugar levels, leading to bloating, fatigue, and even more intense period symptoms. While indulgence is part of the season, it can sometimes come at a cost.

Your Body IS Amazing

Your body is incredibly adaptable, but it’s also deeply connected to the seasons. If your cycle feels off this winter, it’s not a sign that something is “wrong.” It’s your body responding to its environment. By making small, intentional changes, you can help yourself feel more in control—even on the toughest days.
