How Does a Menstrual Cup Work?

Curious about how a menstrual cup works? You’re not alone. These little cups are a game-changer for people who want more freedom, fewer bathroom breaks, and a more eco-friendly period.

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to use a menstrual cup,  from folding and inserting, to checking the seal and removing it calmly. All in step-by-step detail, with no scary vibes or jargon.

 What Is a Menstrual Cup?

A menstrual cup is a small, flexible, shot glass or egg cup like container made from medical-grade silicone. It’s designed to sit comfortably in the vagina, where it catches and holds menstrual fluid instead of absorbing it. Once it’s in, you can forget about it for hours. Whether you’re hiking, swimming, or just taking on the day, a menstrual cup gives you the freedom to keep going without a second thought.

How Does a Menstrual Cup Work?

The menstrual cup works by creating a gentle seal against the walls of the vaginal canal which holds it in place and prevents leaks when blood comes from the cervix.

Step 1: Insertion: You fold the menstrual cup to make it smaller, then insert it into the vaginal canal.

Step 2: Opening and Sealing: Once inside, the cup unfolds and forms a seal around the walls of the vaginal canal. This seal prevents leaks by keeping the cup securely in place.

Step 3: Collecting Menstrual Fluid: The cup collects fluid throughout the day. Most menstrual cups can hold between 10–30ml of fluid, up to 4 times more than a tampon and only needs emptying every 12 hours for most people.

Step 4: Removing and Emptying: To remove the menstrual cup, simply pinch the body of the cup to break the seal and gently pull it out. You then empty the cup, rinse it, and reinsert.

How to Insert a Menstrual Cup

 Step 1: Wash Your Hands

Before doing anything, give your hands a proper wash with soap and warm water. You’re dealing with an internal product, so clean hands help prevent irritation or infection.

Step 2: Fold the Cup

To insert your cup comfortably, you’ll first need to fold it smaller. Here are two beginner-friendly folds:

Option 1: The C-Fold

  1. Flatten the cup between your thumb and fingers.
  2. Fold it in half to form a “C” shape.
  3. Hold the folded edge firmly between your fingers.

Option 2: The Punch-Down Fold (Narrowest Insertion)

  1. Push the rim down into the base of the cup using one finger.
  2. Pinch the sides together around the point to old the shape into a triangle.

Step 3: Find a Comfortable Position

Squatting, sitting on the toilet, or raising one leg on the bath edge can help you feel more relaxed and in control. Remember the yoga position you used to use to insert a tampon!

You might not get it perfect the first time, that’s okay! Think of it like learning to ride a bike. A little practice = lifelong freedom.

Step 4: Insert the Cup

While keeping your fold secure in one hand, grip near the base (not the rim). Gently angle the cup towards your tailbone, not straight up. This follows the natural angle of your vaginal canal. Gently push it in until the base is just inside (not too deep,  it’s not a tampon!).

Once inside, release your grip. The cup should pop open and begin forming a gentle seal. but not uncomfortable.

Step 5: Checking The Seal

No seal = leaks. Here’s how to confirm it’s sealed:

A secure seal is what keeps your cup leak-free. There are two easy ways to check:

  • Tug Gently
Give the stem a soft tug. If the cup resists, it means suction has been created and the seal is likely in place.
  • Feel Around the Base
Use a clean finger to feel around the base of the cup. It should feel smooth and round. If it feels flat or folded, it might not be open properly.

Step 6: Wear the cup:

You can wear a menstrual cup for up to 12 hours, depending on your flow, but some people prefer to empty it every 4 to 8 hours, especially on heavier days. Over time, you’ll get to know your cycle and figure out what works best for you.

Cleaning The Cup

During your period, rinse the cup with water once a day. If you’re out and about, a small bottle of water or menstrual cup wipe can help you clean it on the go.

At the end of your cycle, sterilise the cup by boiling it in water for five minutes or using LU’s cold water cleaning tablets. Let it dry completely and store it till next month.

Tips for First-Time Users

  1. Start at Home: Your first few tries might take some practice, so give yourself time and start at home.
  2. Experiment with Folds: Not all folds work for everyone. Try a couple of folds to see which feels easiest for insertion.
  3. Use Water or Lubricant: If needed, use a water-based lubricant to make insertion more comfortable.
  4. Be Patient: It’s normal for it to take a few cycles to get fully comfortable with using a menstrual cup, so give yourself time to get used to it.

Why Choose a Menstrual Cup?

Menstrual cups offer unique benefits that make them a fantastic option for many people:

  • Long-Lasting Protection: Menstrual cups can hold more fluid than tampons or pads, which means fewer changes throughout the day and night.
  • Eco-Friendly: A single cup can last for years with proper care, reducing waste from disposables.
  • Cost-Effective: Although the initial cost may be higher, a menstrual cup saves money in the long run since you won’t need to buy products every month.
  • Gentle on the Body: Made from medical-grade materials, menstrual cups don’t contain harmful chemicals or fragrances, making them safe and comfortable.
